Spiritual places, by its definition itself, is a place of worship. Devotees visit these shrines to cleanse their mind while others come in the belief to wash away their sins. There are also some, who come to enjoy the sheer beauty and to see the magnificent architecture of these places. Well, Northeast India is not far behind in this regard. Northeast India is home to many Ancient Temple, Churches, Monasteries as well as some new ones too with a varied history and culture significance.
1. Rumtek Monastery (Sikkim):
Location: Tsurphu Labrang Pal Karmae Sangha Dhuche, Dharma Chakra centre, Sikkim, 737135
This monastery is located 23 km from the capital city Gantok.
Chief Priest- Ogyen Trinley Dorje
Rumtek monastery was originally known as Dharma Chakra Centre. It belongs to the Kargyu sect of Buddhist who was originated in Tibet during the 12th century. This monastery has been preserving a Golden Stupa and various other sculpture which belongs to the 16th Karmapa.
Visiting Time- Open 24 hrs.
2. Kamakhya Mandir (Assam):
Location: Nilachal Hill, Guwahati, Kamrup , Kamrup metropolitian , 781010
Head Priest: Kabindra Prasad Sarma.
Festival: Ambubasi Mela
Kamakhya Temple is a very powerful, sacred and a rarest seat of Shaktipeetha of India. This spiritual place is famous for its ancient legend, as it is believed that, it was here where the genitals of Goddess Sati, consort of Lord Shiva fell after her corpse was cut into fifty pieces by Lord Vishnu. Later Lord Shiva built a shakti temple on the site.
3. Kohima Cathedral (Nagaland):
Location: Aradurah Hill, Kohima, Nagaland 797001
Bishop- James Thoppil
Cathedral of Kohima is one of the famous spiritual places to visit in Nagaland. The architecture of this church incorporates many traditional elements of Naga houses. The cathedral was consecrated in the year 1991. And the expense of the construction of the church was mostly funded by the Japanese people, in the memory of Japanese soldiers who died in Kohima during WWII.
4. Nartiang Durga Temple (Meghalaya):
Location: Nartiang, Western Jayantia Hills of Meghalaya, 79315
Nartiang temple is 62.6 km away from Shillong (via NH6), which is a 2hours drive from the capital city.
Nartiang Durga Temple is a place of divine power. It is believed that here the mans' soul can leave its mortal self. In the past, human sacrifice was prevalent in this temple. But it was stopped with the advent of the British. Although the practice of sacrificing goats and ducks still exist there.
5. Parshuram Kund (Arunachal Pradesh):
Location: Brahmaputra Plateau, Lohit, 792001
It is 8 hr and 65minute drive from the capital city of Itanagar.
Parshuram khund is a famous Hindu spiritual place dedicated to Lord Parshuram. The legend is, Lord Parshuram killed his mother with an axe on the order of his father, the axe got stuck to his hand because of his unspeakable crime. So, in order to wash away his sin, he came to the Lohit river of Arunachal Pradesh. Every year during Makar Sankranti, Hindu devotees come to place to take a dip in the waters of Parshuram khund in order to wash away their sins.
6. Tripureshwari Temple (Tripura):
Location: Matbari, Udaipur, Gomati district of Tripura,799013
It is 1hour and a 17minute drive from the capital city of Agartala, which is approximately 51 km away from the city.
Tripureswari Temple is a 500 years old temple. This temple was founded by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in the year 1501 AD. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. It is believed that it is this place where the toe of the right foot of Sati fell. And every year thousands of pilgrims and tourists come here to say their prayers and to receive blessings.
7. Solomon Temple (Mizoram):
Location: Chawlhhmun, Aizwal -796009
It is a 17minute route, which is situated 6.1 km apart from the capital
city of Aizwal.
Solomon temple was constructed by Kohhram Thianglim, which is also known
as Holy Church in English. This beautiful building is located in the
Kirdong Valley of chawlhhmun in the western part of Aizwal city. It was
made using only imported white marbles. The construction of this church
is similar to that of the churches mentioned in the old testament.
Visiting Time: 9.30 am to 4.30 pm
Conclusion- Northeast India is the house of many other majestic and beautiful spiritual sites. Unfortunately, I have mentioned only a handful of sites and places. Will definitely try to add some in the text some in the next blog. Suggestions accepted.
